Pastor L.M. “Melvin” Williamson, age 91 of Carthage passed away Tuesday (November 22, 2016) at Peak Resource - Pinelake in Carthage.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday (November 29, 2016) at Yates - Thagard Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Summer Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service beginning at 12:00 pm.
A native of Moore County he was a son of the late James Alexander and Kitty Belle Blue Williamson. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII where he served on the US Wainright in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. After serving his country he returned to Moore County and married his wife of 44 years, the late Pauline Simpson Williamson. He owned a service station in Southern Pines for three years and then in 1951 he was called to preach the word of God. He attended Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga graduating in 1953. While in Chattanooga, TN he pastored Mayflower Baptist Church for 5 ½ years.
He returned to Carthage in 1957 where he pastored Summer Hill Baptist Church for 28 years. He then accepted a call to Calvary Faith Baptist Church in Siler City where he commuted from Carthage for over 20 years. In 2006 he joined Yates-Thagard Baptist Church where he continued to preach from time to time until his health prevented him from doing it any longer.
Melvin was a loyal servant of God, a devoted husband and a caring and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was loved and respected by all who knew him because of the care and compassion he showed to everyone.
In addition to his parents and his wife Pauline he was preceded in death by brothers James H. Williamson, Billy H. Williamson, Alfred W. Williamson; sisters Lessie Mae Short, Myrtle Frye, Alma Love; grandson Timothy Phillips.
He is survived by his children Cathy Whitaker and Husband Jerry, Patricia Dutton and husband Denny, Melva Phillips and husband Jody, Mark Williamson and wife Miriam all of Carthage; brother Alex Williamson and wife Myrtle of Southern Pines; grandchildren Jason, Joy, Kevin, Tonya, Ashley, Tracy, Jeffery, Trevor and Tyler; 19 great-grandchildren.
